Paid time off, holidays, sick leave, and leave of absence policies
Paid Time Off (PTO)
We believe hard work should be balanced with time away from the office. We encourage you to use your PTO — just make sure you discuss with your manager before making any firm plans.
Eligibility & Accrual
All full-time equivalent (FTE) employees are eligible for PTO. Accrual begins after 90 days of FTE employment. One additional day is added to your PTO bank for each year at Black Ink, with a maximum of 25 days. PTO balances are updated on Stay in the Black.

Rollover & Expiration
Up to 3 unused PTO days can be rolled over into the next calendar year. Rollover PTO expires at the end of June (6/30). Any additional unused PTO expires on December 31st. Upon voluntary or involuntary termination, PTO is not paid out.
Sick Time
Black Ink provides 5 sick days (40 hours) per calendar year to all full-time team members. Sick time is provided upfront and does not accrue. Unused sick days do not roll over.
Observed Holidays
Black Ink observes the following holidays with scheduled business closures. Dates are updated annually by management at the beginning of each calendar year.
- New Year's Day — January 1
- Martin Luther King Jr. Day — Third Monday of January
- Memorial Day — Last Monday of May
- Juneteenth — June 19
- Independence Day — July 4
- Labor Day — First Monday of September
- Thanksgiving Break — Third Thursday & Friday in November
- Christmas Break — Varies annually
Floating Holiday & Birthday
Team members can choose one (1) floating holiday per calendar year. Additionally, all team members get their birthday off as a paid day. If your birthday falls on a weekend or holiday, take the nearest business day off instead.
Leaves of Absence
PTO is not earned during pay periods in which unpaid leave, short-term disability, or workers' compensation leave is taken. If you have a life event that requires a leave of absence, please speak with your manager as soon as possible. Leaves of absence for any amount of time are not guaranteed and are at the discretion of Black Ink.
Jury Duty
Employees receive paid time off for jury duty. Notify your manager at least 1 month before the service date. Documentation of service is required. For extended jury service, employees may be placed on unpaid leave.
Bereavement
Employees may take 5 days for the passing of a spouse, child, or parent, and 3 days for other immediate family members. Additional time may be granted at management's discretion.
Paid Family Leave (NY Employees)
New York employees may be eligible for Paid Family Leave (PFL) for bonding with a new child, caring for a family member with a serious health condition, or assisting when a family member is deployed abroad on active military service.
- Receive 70% of normal pay during PFL leave
- Up to 12 weeks of leave (consecutive or scheduled apart)
- Must be FTE for 26 consecutive weeks, or part-time for a minimum of 175 days per year
- Notify management at least 45 days in advance for foreseeable events
- All required insurance forms must be filed with Black Ink before taking leave

Black Ink provides PTO on an accrual basis which begins from day 1 of full-time employment. You receive 18 vacation days per year, plus 1 additional day at each anniversary, with a maximum accrual limit of 25 days. PTO balances are tracked on Stay in the Black.
Rollover & Separation
Accrued PTO balances can be rolled over from year to year. Upon separation from the organization, accrued PTO balances are payable in cash.
Sick Time
Black Ink provides 5 sick days (40 hours) per calendar year to all full-time team members. Sick time is given upfront with no accrual. These days cannot be banked or rolled over.

Leaves of Absence
If you have a life event that requires a leave of absence, please speak with your manager as soon as possible. Leaves of absence for any amount of time are not guaranteed and are at the discretion of Black Ink.
Repeated Absences
Repeated or excessive absences during business hours may be considered unacceptable job performance. If you are absent for 3 consecutive days without notifying your manager, it may be treated as voluntary termination of employment.
